"There's a great sensitivity to the Jewish community's concerns about terrorism in the region," he said. "There is a growing real- ization by the leaders of all three nations that Islamic extremism, primarily exported from Iran, constitutes a threat not only to the Jewish community but to all the nations of the region." All three nations are toughen- ing their border controls, he said. Argentine president Carlos Men- em told Mr. Baer that his gov- ernment is making progress in the investigation into the Buenos Aires bombing — a depressingly familiar refrain. "The difference is that now the United States, Israel and Ar- gentina are working closely in the investigation," Mr. Baer said. "And the five nations in the area are working very closely with the United States in developing a strategic approach to anti-ter- rorist measures. That's a very en- couraging development." LAKEWOOD SPECIALTY FOOD CENTER & INTERNATIONAL GOURMET CARRY-OUT Lithuania Reopens Nazi Case Washington (JTA) — In an about face, the Lithuanian government has decided to reopen the case of an alleged Nazi war criminal. Two weeks ago, Lithuania said it did not have enough evidence to prosecute Aleksandras T 87, of Norwood, Mass. The U.S. Justice Department is seeking to deport Mr. Lileikis. The depart- ment contends that as head of the Vilnius Gestapo, Lileikis signed orders directing his force to hold arrested Jews at the Vilnius Hard Labor camp and then turn them over to killing squads for execution. The announcement not to pros- ecute, which triggered strong protests from Jewish leaders and others, meant that the deporta- tion proceedings might be slowed down. "Perhaps it was a bit hasty on the part of the prosecutors" to de- cide not to prosecute, said Lithuanian Consul General Pe- tras Anusas, speculating on why his country changed its mind. The New York-based diplomat consul also said a number. of Lithuanian officials reportedly regretted the decision. The orig- inal prosecutors were removed from the case, and four others have been assigned, Mr. Anusas said in a telephone interview. Lithuania's reversal came on the eve of a scheduled visit to Is- rael by Lithuanian President Al- girdas Brazauskas. Last year, the Justice Depart- ment's Nazi hunting arm, the Of- fice of Special Investigations, began proceedings to strip Mr. Lileikis of his citizenship.
