ancer-choreographer-
teacher Harriet Berg soon
will celebrate two mile-
stone anniversaries by pre-
senting her favorite form of
entertainment — a program of
contemporary dance. 11
Marking her 35th anniver4ary
with the Jewish Community
Center (JCC) and her 30th an-
niversary as the founder and
artistic director of the C enter-
housed Festival Dancers, the vet-
eran performer will open the
program with "Heart Murmurs,"
an autobiographical narration
punctuated by movement and
props.
Ms. Berg will step on stage at
the Maple-Drake JCC at 4 p.m.
Sunday, April 9. Her segment

Current troupers — Margo Co-
hen, Patty Ceresnie, Maggie
Jobin, Shelly Krochmal and
Michelle Millman — will close the
event dancing to the music of
George Gershwin.
"I really believe that dance has
a kind of magic, and I could not
live without it," said Ms. Berg, 70,
who did not begin studying dance
seriously until after she was mar-
ried and raising two children. "It
gives me moments of feeling tru-
ly alive.
"Martha Graham is my inspi-
ration. She kept going until she
was 95, and I'd like to keep danc-
ing as long as possible."
When Ms. Berg was growing
up, she dreamed of becoming a
writer, the career ultimately pur-
sued by her son, Martin,
a California journalist
covering the O.J. Simp-
son trial for the Los An-
geles Daily Journal. For
fun, she tried to copy the
ballet movements prac-
ticed by an older sister.
While attending
Wayne State Universi-
ty (WSU), she enrolled
in dance studies at the
encouragement of her
husband, Irving, who di-
rected the art program
at Cass Technical High
School in Detroit.
"I took classes be-
cause I enjoyed them,"
