FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK.

The Midrasha Center for Adult
Jewish Learning will host a
three-part community learning
series this spring, featuring guest
Scholars from CLAL-the Na-
tional Jewish Center for Learn-
ing and Leadership.
Except as otherwise noted,
there is a charge; and all sessions
will be held at the Midrasha,
21550 West 12 Mile Road in
Southfield. The theme of the
CLAL series is "Leadership for
the Post-Modern Era: The
Dilemma of Contemporary Life."
There will be three opportunities
to study the same material with
each of the three speakers dur-
ing his respective visit.
The schedule is as follows: Ses-
sion One, led by Rabbi
David W. Nelson, is titled, "The
Garden of Jewish Sensuality:
Body,Sexuality, and Relation-
ships in Judaism." Rabbi Nelson
will study and compare the two
primordial biblical gardens (the
Garden of Eden and the garden
of the Song of Songs) in an at-
tempt to understand the tensions
in Jewish tradition regarding hu-
man sexuality, relationships, gen-
der, and images of body. Session
One will be offered on Monday,
April 10, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. (pre-
ceded by light lunch at noon) and
from 7:30 to 9 p.m. (light dessert
will be served), and again on
Tuesday, April 11, at a continen-
tal breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Session Two, led by Rabbi
Tsvi Blanchard, is titled "Pride,
Panic, and Penitence: A Psy-
chology of Guilt in the Jewish -
Tradition." It will be offered three
times on Monday, May 15: 7:30
to 9 a.m. (continental breakfast),
12:30 to 2 p.m. (preceded by light
lunch at noon), and 7:30 to 9 p.m.
(light dessert). Using the clas-
sical biblical story of David and
Bat Sheva, Rabbi Blanchard will
discuss how guilt may originate
in the nexus of power, passion,
and personal responsibility.
CLAL scholar Rabbi Steve
Greenberg, will lead Session
Three, titled "Avoda Kedosha:
Define the Holiness of Work,"
which will analyze the Sabbath
and its relationship to the dif-
ferent but equally compelling
obligation to work and create.
This study session will be offered
on Thursday, June 15, from
12:30 to 2 p.m. (preceded by light
lunch at noon) and will be re-
peated at no charge as part of the
program at the Agency for Jew-
ish Education Annual Meeting
that evening. It will be offered
again on Friday, June 16, from
7:30 to 9 a.m. over continental
breakfast.
For information about
Midrasha's upcoming CLAL se-
ries, call Nancy Kaplan, (810)
354-1050.
