CONGRATULATIONS TO
A cold compress is applied to the cut under Scotty Buck's left eye.
M
oments after watching
a replay of the final mo-
ments of Scotty Buck's
bout on the scoreboard
at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the
crowd of 18,165 began to boo.
Then it chanted, "Head butt!
Head butt! Head butt!" and fol-
lowed with an unprintable mis-
sive.
Buck heard the commotion,
and he wondered what it was all
about. The 21-year-old junior
lightweight boxer from Farm-
ington Hills had just lost at 1:03
of the second round in what was
developing into a six-round un-
dercard war with Rudy Lansford,
21, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and he
was angry about the defeat.
Buck had Lunsford against the
ropes when he suddenly fell to
the canvas. When Buck got to his
feet, referee Dale Grable stopped
the fight. The wobbly Buck al-
ready was sporting a cut and a
huge mouse under his left eye.
Later, it took seven stitches to
close the half-inch cut.
"I thought it was a punch that
got me until the crowd started
yelling," Buck said.
His father, Leon, who was at
ringside, didn't think initially
that it was a punch. At least a
punch from Lunsford.
"It looked like Hercules had hit
Scotty," Leon said.
The replay the fans watched
clearly showed that Lunsford
nailed Buck with an accidental
head butt.
Because of that reason, a for-
mal protest of the decision has
been filed with the Michigan Ath-
letic Board of Control, which gov-
erns boxing in the state, by Jackie
Kallen, Buck's manager.
If the protest is upheld, the
March 20 bout would go into the
books as a technical draw.
Buck, who weighed in at 126
1/2 pounds, came into the fight,
with a 7-1 record and five knock-
outs. Lunsford was 3-0, with all
of his wins coming via the 1(0.
He weighed 128 1/2 pounds.
"I'm not down because I don't
consider that bout a loss," Buck
said. "I had fought a terrible fight
up to the time I was knocked
down, but there's no doubt I
would have beaten (Lunsford) be-
cause I trained so hard for that
fight.
"I had him on the ropes, just
where I wanted him, when I got
hit with the head butt.
"I don't think the head butt
was intentional and (Lunsford)
was a pretty good sport after-
ward. He told me to get back into
the gym and train hard."
Because of his injury, Buck
doesn't expect to return to action
until May. The next boxing card
at the Palace is scheduled for
Wednesday, April 26. ❑
