MISSION
HANDBAGS
From 1967 to 1969, Rabbi David
and Alicia Nelson lived in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, while Rabbi Nel-
son served as the assistant rabbi
for Congregacao Associacao Is-
raelita in Botafogo. Now they are
accompanying a group of De-
izoiters to explore part of South
America's Jewish history.
A tour, organized by Gateway
Travel, will visit Rio de Janeiro
in February 1996, during its
warm season. Also included are
Buenos Aires; Iguassu Falls,
which lies on the border of Ar-
gentina; Brazil and Paraguay.
Jewish places of interest will be
included at each location. There
also will be opportunities to meet
with the local Jewish community.
Participants will be invited to
attend a reception in the home of
gemologist Jules Sauer.
The trip is divided into two op-
tions: 10 days (February 21-
March 1) visiting Buenos Aires,
Iguassu Falls and Rio de Janeiro;
or 15 days (Feb. 21-March 6)
which includes an extension to
Manaus located on the Amazon
River and Sao Salvador, Bahia.
Shabbat dinner with members of
the Jewish community is being
arranged in Bahia; there will be
a cruise on the Amazon to see the
meeting of the waters in Manaus.
Five star hotels have been
selected for all accommodations.

THE JEWISH NEWS
1
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli offi-
cials have tried to smooth over
the tarnished image of its citi-
zens, after repbrts that a group
of Israeli tourists had defaced a
biblical grave site in Jordan.
Israel Television broadcast
footage of the desecrated Tomb
of Aaron, near Petra, Jordan. In
the Bible, Aaron is the brother of
Moses.
Hebrew lettering was scrawled
on the ancient stone and some
antique Hebrew lettering was
partially chiseled away.
News reports here quoted an
Israeli guide for the Society for
the Protection of Nature saying
that Israeli groups had been
barred from entering the site.
Jordanian officials said it had
closed the shrine to all visitors,
due to access trails made unsafe
because of rain.
Tourism Ministry Undersec-
retary Ghassan Mifleh denied the
report that Israelis were banned.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister
Uzi Baram said he had asked ad-
visers for possible steps, includ-
ing legal action, to rein in callous
— Israeli travelers.
