Thank you." Author Phillip Applebaum A biography chronicling the lives of Bessie and Joseph Wetsman and their descendants has been privately published by William M. Davidson, the Wetsmans' grandson. The Wetsmans: Odyssey of an American Family, by Phillip Ap- plebaum of Oak Park, tells the story of one of Detroit's leading families in Jewish affairs and Zionism in the early part of the century. Joseph Wetsman was president of Congregation Shaarey Zedek from 1920 to 1922. His daughter, Sal David- son, was a founding member of the Hadassah organization in De- troit. The Wetsmans also were known as proprietors of some of the best-known movie theaters in Detroit. The Avalon, Linwood and Oriole theaters were located on Linwood Avenue in the heart of the Jewish community from the 1920s to the 1950s. - Michele Bureau, Walled Lake, MI Sell El Al Now Or Later? "Understanding the financial world and it's processes can be quite perplexing I was treated with respect. This is our third mortgage with Republic." - Renee Koch, Fowletville, MI The sale of El Al should be de- layed until it has improved its profitability so it will not be sold at bargain-basement prices, Knesset Economics Committee chairman Gideon Patt (Likud) said. However, El Al managing di- rector Rail Harley retorted that the company will not survive un- less it is sold. "The company has more or less used up whatever credit it can ob- tain - or repay - on the inter- national market," Mr. Harley said. And, he added, El Al desper- ately needs capital because if it is still to be around in 20 years, it must double its fleet and re- place half its existing planes - which means it must buy an av- erage of 1 1/2 planes a year.
