SPRING SPECTACULAR!

barrage of on-screen ferocity?
Why is one unthinkable and the
other acceptable? What can we
say about adults unwilling to
compromise the excitement of
their entertainment while they
travel so that others can be
spared deeply disturbing im-
ages?
(If you think I exaggerate the
impact, try to recall the mas-
sacre that forms the emotional
heart of "Clear and Present Dan-
ger." If it is not deeply disturb-
ing, the movie fails.)
It has become increasingly
difficult to shield children
from images and ideas inappro-
priate to their age. Movies
for children have trailers for
adult thrillers. The careful
boundaries once drawn by
television prescribing what
was permitted on prime time
have seemingly vanished — or
at least become very porous. Any
new step in erotic display or
violence on TV is hailed as
an artistic breakthrough, not
challenged as a cheapening of
the public square. Is there
anyone who — while conceding
that commercials sell billions
of dollars' worth of products
each year — seriously contends
that the combined weight of
brutality doled out with
snappy lines and heroic profiles
has no effect on us or on our chil-
dren?

On a plane,
no one can change
the channel.

As soon as criticism of televi-
sion or movies is raised, some-
one screams "censorship"
and the discussion ends in a
frenzy of backpedaling and
denial. Forget legal measures.
Set aside the secondary issues
of right and left. Where is the
cultural outrage of a society that
is force-fed sexuality and sav-
agery on an unprecedented
scale? Have we lost the capacity
to be sickened at some of the odi-
ous fare of modern "entertain-
ment"?
To reawaken our capacity for
outrage, a simple proposal: Next
time you are on a plane, watch
the eyes of the 6-year-old as she
takes in the antics of a movie like
the one which played on my
most recent flight. It was called
"The Specialist." To judge from
the preview (which the whole
plane heard over the PA system
and watched on the screen) it
was something about organized
crime and explosives experts. I
can't summarize the plot, be-
cause I did not bother with the
headphones. The images were
enough.
