Golan Involvement
Not Recommended

The proposed presence of Amer-
ican servicemen on the Golan
Heights is at least premature
and not a good idea. A peace
treaty between Israel and Syria
is not yet imminent, and an out-
side presence should not be the
means to promote such a treaty.
The security of the two countries
is up only to them.
But even after a treaty it
would not be beneficial to have
Americans posted there. Not only
would these troops dislike being
there, but more importantly, gov-
ernments change or change their
minds. President Eisenhower
broke his word to France and Is-
rael in 1956.
Last but not least, it is neces-
sary to consider Islamic funda-
mentalist fanatics who may
decide to murder one or more of
the Americans stationed there.
Popular support for such a ven-
ture would rapidly erode, and Is-
rael would not be looked upon
with favor.

In a saucepan, combine shredded cabbage with all other ingre-
dients, except apples. Cover and cook over moderate heat for 15
minutes, tossing several times so the cabbage will cook evenly.
Add apples, and toss again. Cover, and cook 5 minutes longer.
Add sugar.
If more water is needed during cooking, add two or three table-
spoons, but when the dish is done, all moisture should have been
cooked away.

We are responding to the "Purim
Spoof' page of your March 11 edi-
tion, in particular to the article
regarding Temple Beth El. Your
tasteless attempt at humor was
devoid of any empathy and com-
mon decency.
A "spoof," which claims to be
humorous, is no excuse for pub-
licly inflicting pain and distress.
We expect higher ethical stan-
dards from your publication.
