The 10-year-old Farmington Hills resident won two of four races en route to tying for first place in the midget girls class during the Michigan Speedskat- ing Association state finals March 4 at the Midland Civic Arena. After finishing a close second in her first two races, Elyse came back to win two in a row and grab a share of the state title along with a 12-year-old from Muskegon. Elyse was co-state champion in the pony class (ages 8-9) last year after a second-place finish in 1993. She won the state title as a peewee (ages 6-7) in 1992. It is caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve, a nerve which runs from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. The most common cause of sciatica is pinching or irritation of the nerve in the lower spine. Sciatica is one of the most common conditions for back surgery and has a high risk of complications. More recent interest in non-surgical treatments for sciatic nerve pain has caused several DR. LEVINE researchers to look at chiropractic manipulation as an alternative. Researchers at St. Thomas Hospital in London recently reported the results of non- surgical treatments for back and sciatic nerve pain in the British Journal of Rheumatology; they found Chiropractic manipulation the single most effective treat- ment in the 513 patients studied. A similar study, at the California College of Medicine at the University of Califor- nia Irvine, also found manipulation to significantly improve clinical signs of sciatic nerve compression. Clearly, chiropractic manipulation is one of the most effective con- servative treatments in those with sciatic nerve pain and should be the first considera- tion in those with sciatica. Newman's big bucket early in the fourth quarter gave Lahser a 45-43 lead, but the Knights never scored again. They finished the season with an 11-13 record, but they won their first district cham- pionship in 10 years. I I
