JFS Hosts
Recovery Seder

Local playwright and EMU pro-
fessor Rachel Feldbin Urist will
discuss the book Shylock by the-
ater critic John Gross on Sunday,
April 2, at the JCC of Washtenaw
County at 10 a.m..
On Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30
p.m., Michael Brooks, the execu-
tive director of the U-M Hillel
Foundation, will discuss Saving
Remnants: Feeling Jewish in
America by Sara Bershtel and
Allen Graubard. Both presenta-
tions are part of Bagels and
Books series, a JCC lecture
series featuring speakers from
the Ann Arbor Jewish communi-
ty.
Shylock is a scholarly look at
the stage history of Shake-
speare's famous Jew, seen as vic-
tim and villain through the ages.
Gross surveys the vagaries of cul-
tural prejudices and theatrical
fashions as he presents Shylock
but also balances historical per-
spective with a keen eye for the
actors who undertook the role.
The series is free and open to
the public.

A Recovery Seder, emphasizing
the spiritual and downplaying
the consumption aspects of
Passover, will presented by Jew-
ish Federation of Washtenaw
County on Thursday, April 20, at
7:30 p.m., at the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Washtenaw
Country. The seder is a project
of Jewish Family Services' Ad-
diction Task Force.
The seder will be distinguished
by the fact that there will be no
wine or food consumed, in sup-
port of individuals recovering
from alcohol and overeating
problems. The Haggadah to be
used was written by members of
various 12-step groups and fo-
cuses on the themes of freedom
from personal bondage, faith and
courage for recovery and the
building of strong recovery com-
munities. Readings in the Hag-
gadah include traditional and
other Jewish sources, including
the 12-step writings of Kerry
Olitzsky and Rami Shapiro.
To attend, respond to JFS by
Friday, April 14, (313) 971-3280.
Participants are asked to bring a
candle. Nonalcoholic, non-caloric
beverages will be used for kid-
dush. Child care (nominal cost)
will be available if requested in
advance.
