that, before the next Lag B-Omer,
she will have found a husband —
or, in the Djerban tradition which
has prevailed for centuries, will
have had a husband "arranged"
for her.
The 18th of Iyyar is also the
time for the grand procession
which is the very climax of the
whole festival. It is then that the
menara, a large candelabrum in
the shape of a six-sided pyramid,
is taken from the caravanserai
room in which it has been stored
since the preceding Lag B'Omer
and wheeled across the court-
yard.
For its public appearance the
menara will have been bedecked,
wrapped and hidden in layers of
silk and muslin scarves which,
together with silver rimonim at-
tached to the top of the revered
candelabrum, will be the object
of loud and lively bidding. Dur-
ing the auction, an orchestra will
play traditional melodies, inter-
spersed, in the present decade,
with rock-and-roll. In the gal-
leries above the crowded court-
yard the women of the Djerba
Jewish community will make
their appearance, laden with jew-
elry, wearing their finest silks
and, after each transaction,"ulu-
lating" (in the words of authors
Udovich and Valensi) to the beat
of the orchestra and "generously
sprinkling both the menara and
the assembled pilgrims standing
around it with scented water,
while the auctioneers down glass-
es filled to the brim with spirits.
After the last scarf has been
bid for, the menara will be car-
ried in a slow procession from the
synagogue to the center of Hara
Sghira. Again there will be spir-
ited auctioneering, this time for
the privilege of wheeling along
the sacred object for a yard or
two. With frequent stops for each
newly-successful bidders, the
slow march of no more than half
a mile will take hours.
Hara Sghira finally achieved,
the procession will halt for a brief
prayer service at each synagogue
in the village and then return to
Ghriba. The menara candles will
be lit, the paraders will nibble
fresh fruits, almonds and sun-
flower seeds, pour themselves
generous drinks.
Lag B'Omer is the one time of
the year when the usual barriers
are taken down. Women, who
otherwise can never enter the
synagogue except to clean it every
Thursday for their menfolk's ob-
servance of the Sabbath, are per-
mitted to join the pilgrimage,
light candles, deposit the raw
eggs and retrieve the baked ones.
Muslims also join in the proces-
sion and in the caravanserai hus-
tle-bustle, song-and-dance and
general revelry.
Medieval Christianity had its
pilgrimage to Canterbury; Lslam
has its haj to Mecca; no less an
event is the yearly Jewish mis-
sion to Djerba. I I
