ROY FAIRCHILD . TARKAY Art Leaders the Yom Kippur War in the back- ground. Some critics also claim that Mr. Lanzmann interviewed most- ly high-ranking officers and young male soldiers serving in elite armored and air force units, giving too small a role to women and reservists. Vets recall the fear of being wounded and losing friends. Yet on the whole, critics agree, Mr. Lanzmann is successful in sympathetically revealing the hu- man side of the IDF to a wide au- dience. He gives both the critics and the patriots a chance to make their case, and leaves viewers with a better understanding of the subject. Plans have not been finalized as to when and how Tsahal will be marketed in the United States. There's always the possibility it could be shown in theaters, as was Shoah. But it's more likely — specifically because of Tsahal's length — that most Americans will have to rent the film in a video store or see it in an Israeli film festival. Thus, although it was shot three years ago, the film an- ticipates many of the consuming questions today. Like Shoah, which because of its length was usually shown in two parts, Tsahal at times re- quires patience. This is especial- ly true when it comes to language. As with any film using contin- uous translation and subtitles, there are moments in Tsahal when the nuances of the speaker are lost. Most of those inter- viewed respond in stilted English, while others speak in Hebrew or French but then have a woman's "voice-over." It also is hard not to be dis- tracted by Mr. Lanzmann's own heavily accented English, as with his question to a young tank corps member, "Zis is your tonk?"
