AIDS Is
Subject Of Game

An original Israeli parlor game
designed to teach players how to
avoid AIDS has been released by
its manufacturer, Regev Games
of Kibbutz Regavim near
Binyamina.
Medical consultant to the
manufacturer was Dr. Shlomo
Ma'ayan, director of the AIDS
Department at Jerusalem's
Hadassah-University Hospital.
The game is designed for
four or more players ages 12
and up. Players answer AIDS-
related questions printed on
cards and the contestant hold-
ing the least "dangerous behav-
ior cards" at the end is the
winner.
In Hebrew, the game is called
Al Hahaim ye al Hamavet ("On
Life and Death"). The English
version is titled AIDS Counter-
AIDS.
The game was an attention-
getter at a press preview for
the IsraToys '95 fair, which
took place March 20-22 at
the Tel Aviv Exhibition
Grounds.
The Israeli toys-and-games
sector is facing a year of uncer-
tainty with the anticipated ar-
rival of American giant Toys 'R'
Us on the retail scene this sum-
mer.

Did Banks
Buy Bonds?

Israeli banks may have pur-
chased Israel Bonds using for-
eign banks as a front, Treasury
a-lid...Bank of Israel officials ad-
mitted.
Although Treasury regula-
tions forbid Israeli banks from
purchasing Israel Bonds,
sold only to individuals and fi-
nancial institutions abroad,
Bank of Israel spokesman
Avigdor Levy said, "it would
be pretty hard to track them
down."
The banks reportedly used
Austrian banks, which last
year bought $125 million in
bonds when Israel Bonds yields
were significantly above market
rates.
The Israeli banks are sus-
pected of depositing money in
the Austrian banks, which
agreed to purchase the bonds for
them, paying them most of the
return on the bonds.
Israel Bonds rejected the re-
port, saying: "Israel Bonds did
not sell or attempt to sell bonds
to Israeli banks, in accordance
with the Accountant-General's
directives.
"In mid-1994, 11 Austrian
banks purchased bonds in their
name for amounts of $2 million
to $30 million each."
