SO MANY CHIEFS page 41

American-oriented Israelis. Many
did not speak English. They came
in here skeptical; they weren't
sure about this. They are on the
ground back in their cities work-
ing out important issues. So
when they said it was important
for them to be here in Detroit, it
meant a lot to me to hear it."
Followups already have been
planned, Mr. Aronson said. Sinai
Hospital will send physicians to
work for a month as advisers at
a hospital in Israel. The Univer-
sity of Michigan will be asked to
send key faculty in several areas
of expertise, and urban planners
and engineers from Israel will
spend a month at MSU for fur-
ther education and instruction.
Federation is attempting to
have Gov. Engler visit Israel with
a bilateral trade committee.When
the Michigan Miracle Mission II
visits Israel this May, several De-
troiters will meet with members
of the delegation.
One of those who wants to con-
tinue the relationship is Mayor
Rodrig.
"I knew that Detroit was an in-
dustrial city," she said. "I didn't
know, though, that the Jewish
community was so active and so
alive. remember that. We have
made an important connection
here, one that will be important
in our economic development.
That's all very necessary. But I'll
also remember the beautiful
green landscapes we saw while
we traveled. This was a beauti-
ful visit, it was beyond our ex-
pectations." 0
