uled with El Al Israel Airlines to
transport 414 people from Cleve-
land to Israel. For both cities, the
direct flight marked a first.
Cleveland also patterned its
monthly mission newsletter,
"Tachlis," after Detroit's "Tiyul
Times." The publications keep
trip participants informed while
generating enthusiasm for the
impending excursion.
Detroit's pre-mission meetings
constituted yet another commu-
nity-building technique Cleve-
land sought to emulate. The
meetings educate mission par-
ticipants about Israel, Ms. Gans
says. They also provide a forum
for people to become acquainted
before the trip.
Ms. Sherman says she has spo-
ken with mega-mission directors
in other cities, as well: Denver,
Los Angeles and elsewhere.
"They call and ask how we got
started and how we were able to
get three plane-loads of people
the first time," Ms. Sherman
says.

They inquire about the best
computer system to use, how to
pair hotel roommates, how to
book people on different planes
and how to juggle the literally
thousands of variables involved
in executing a mega mission.
To mission leaders in all cities,
Ms. Sherman stresses the im-
portance of working closely with
local rabbis and Jewish agencies.
People ought to feel, she said, as
though they are involved in a
community-wide project.
Enthusiasm generated from
Detroit's first Miracle Mission
carried over to plans for a second,
to be held this year May 7-17.
When registration for Miracle
Mission II opened last spring, it
sold out in a month. Ms. Gans
says Cleveland has experienced
the same phenomenon, and the
community will consider a sequel.
Roy Feinberg is the assistant
director of development at the
Jewish Federation of Greater
Philadelphia. In 1989, his com-
munity brought 800 people to Is-
rael. Last November, 650 people
took the trip.
Like Ms. Sherman and Ms.
Gans, Mr. Feinberg believes the
power of a mega mission unbeat-
able. In most cases, one-third to
one-half of the participants have
never been to Israel. In all cases,
people came home feeling closer
to Israel and each other, he says.
"We have people here in Philly
who have lived in the same neigh-
borhood and have never gotten
to know each other. Then, they
go away together on a mission
and remain together," he said.
"We find that people who go on
missions come back different." ❑
