After four years,
approval
process ends.

Rabbi Kagan said engineer-
ing and architectural work on
the $5 million "first phase of the
first phase" will now move for-
ward. This will include a syna-
gogue and an administration
building for the project, designed
to be a rabbinical college when
complete.
Other buildings planned for
the first phase are a retreat
center, library and one college
building. Eventually, the 40-
acre site will include housing .
for 50 students as well as facul-
ty.
The township board on Mon-
day denied a Lubavitch request
to extend boardwalks and to
build gazebos on the wetlands
on the property. The designs
were based on similar structures
the township has built on its own
wetlands.
But the board did approve
a Lubavitch request to build
a 27-foot-wide access road
through the undeveloped north-
ern portion of the Synagogue
Campus site. The township's
planning commission had
recommended a 16-foot-wide
road, with widening to 27
feet when that portion is devel-
oped.
Rabbi Kagan said the Lubav-
itch Foundation has received a
letter of credit from a bank to fi-
nance the project. He said a crit-
ical fund-raising meeting of
principal backers of the project
will be held in Florida on Mon-
day. [1]

he Lubavitch Foundation's
Synagogue Campus of
Living Judaism on Mon-
day evening received
final approval from the West
Bloomfield Township board of
trustees.
The unanimous vote of the
trustees ended a four-year bat-
tle to gain the township's OK for
the Lubavitch project on Maple
Road, west of the Jewish Com-
munity Campus at Maple and
Drake.
Rabbi Yitschak Kagan, assis-
tant director of the Lubavitch
Foundation, said a ground-
breaking ceremony will be
held in early July, coinciding
with the first yahrtzeit of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe, the late Rab-
bi Menachem Mendel Schneer-
son.
