It got its name during the days
when it looked down upon two
bodies of water, the Sea of Galilee
and the Sea of Huleh.
The place was founded by Dr.
E. Jarus, a German-Jewish
physician who purchased the
land in 1927. He practiced what
today would be called naturopa-
thy. He envisioned Mizpeh
Hayamim as a retreat where
guests could find escape from the
pressures of daily life. Under the
influence of the grandeur of the
physical setting — in the shad-
ow of Mt. Hermon, facing the
Golan Heights, and looking down
upon the Huleh Valley — and in
an atmosphere of "return to na-
ture," an almost monastic life

as a whole. In the case of each,
the beginning was a Utopian and
idealistic dream of what was to
be, and in each case the culmi-
nation is a successful but much
more worldly and realistic ful-
fillment. The vision is preserved,
but tempered with practical corn-
promise.
Israelis who used to go to the
health spas of Europe have found
that on the 30-acre estate locat-
ed only a 10-minute ride from
mystical Safed, they have all the
facilities for the usual roster of
treatments. Though sometimes
called a temple of health, Mizpeh
Hayamim is not a sanatorium. It
has none of the atmosphere of a
hospital.
