MARKED DIFFICULTY
FROM A MILD LOSS
In come cases, it only takes a
mild hearing loss to disrupt a per-
son's ability to understand speech
and conduct normal conversa-
tions. In particular, losses affect-
ing the high frequencies impact
the ability to understand the high-
frequency sounds of such impor-
tant consonants in the English
language as "s," "f," "th," "t," and
"k." The fact that these consonants
are also uttered with weak inten-
sity makes it even more likely that
the person with a high frequency
loss will confuse one for the oth-
er. Factor in the noise encountered
in most listening situations and a
person wtih a high-frequency loss
is likely to complain that those
around him or her are mumbling.
Instead, the fault rests with the lis-
tener's hearing ability.

ly columns helpful to you? Do you

P.S. A greater loss for high-fre-
quency sounds than for low-fre-
quency sounds is often
characteristic of a sensorineural
loss.
