Essay Contest
High School students currnetly
enrolled in grades 10-12 are in-
vited to participate in the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee's annual
Skirball Essay Contest.
Increasing questions are being
raised about the interpretation
and application of the First
Amendment to our Constitution.
This year we ask students, 'What
Does History Teach Us About the
Use and/or Abuse of the Consti-
tutional Guarantee of Free
Speech?"
The grand prize is $5,000 and
a trip to Washington, D.C. Sec-
ond prize is $500 and there are
50 third prizes. There also will be
a special regional prize of $300
awarded for an outstanding essay
from a student served in the
Michigan region.
Guidelines to the essay and ap-
plication forms must accompany
every entry and entries must be
postmarked no later than March
15. Winners will be announced

Adat Shalom
Sets Retreat
The Adat Shalom Synagogue
Youth Department will hold its
annual Samuel and Doris Farber
Tamarack Retreat March 11-13;
the weekend is for students in the
8th through 12th grades.
Among the Adat Shalom staff
who will be at the retreat are Re-
ligious School Director Ron Leff,
Youth Director Marc Kay, and
Shoresh Youth Group Adviser
Jason Vieder.
Varied Events
At Purim Fair
Beth Shalom religious school will
host a school-wide Purim fair on
Sunday, March 12. Purim activ-
ity stations will be open from 9
a.m.-noon for religious school stu-
dents. The students will make
Purim projects as well as deco-
rations for the synagogue for the
megillah reading.
Parents are encouraged to visit
any time during the fair.

American Heart Association
On Sunday, March 26, new
American teens, ages 14-18, may
attend a Wilderness Day Trip, co-
sponsored by the Resettlement
Service and Jewish Experiences
For Families. It will introduce
them to wilderness survival
skills. The program is scheduled
from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., plus a dinner
following the event at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
Bill Schulman, director of
Wilderness Experience, will lead
the group. The teens will meet at
the JPM at 8 a.m.; they will be
bussed to a park in Brighton.
There is a fee for the program.

Spring Dance
For Singles
Temple Israel's Singles Exten-
sion Group invites all Jewish sin-
gles 50 and over to a "Hot Dawg!
It's Almost Spring" dance. This
supper and dance party will be
held at Temple Israel on Sunday,
March 12, at 6:30 p.m. Hot dogs,
salads, and dessert will be served.

Shir Shalom
Hosts Conclave
Shir Shalom Temple Youth will
host NFTY's Michigan Region's
annual Boards Conclave March
11 and 12. Besides the business
portion of the meeting, there also
will be a social activity and shul-
in Saturday evening.
The youth group also will spon-
sor a Purim Carnival at Temple
Shir Shalom March 19, from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets and door
prize tickets are on sale at the
temple office and will be avail-
able at the carnival.
Teen Connection
Plans Events
BBYO Teen Connection of Metro
Detroit will attend a Viper's game
on Sunday, March 12. All Teen
Connection members and guests
attending will gather at the
Palace at noon when the group
will meet the Viper players be-
fore the game.
Ann Arbor Teen Connection
will hold a rollerblading, minia-
ture golf and video game party
and pizza lunch at US Blades.
This program will be held jointly
with the Windsor JCC Teen Con-
nection program. There's a
charge.

2-13 United Jewish Appeal Na-
