Traumatized by the separation
from their parents, children shied
away from close friendships with
each other.
"I was too depressed to make
friends," Sarah said. "I was sad
most of the time."
For the families of the children,
the pain was no less.
Every weekend when his sis-
ter Beatrice was in the Jewish
Children's Home, Louis Fireman
would take the streetcar from his
house on Cameron to meet her.
There he would grab Beatrice's
hand and walk back to the street-
car stop to take her home for the
weekend.
They would have happy times
during those visits that still cause
him to smile 57 years later. Away
from the orphanage, Beatrice and
Louis would play games with oth-
er neighborhood children.
But, eventually, the time
would come to take Beatrice back
to the orphanage.
"No one could properly care for
her in our house. My mother was
in the hospital with tuberculosis;
my father worked as a house
painter. There were three boys in
the house," he said. "We didn't
know how to raise a girl."
So when the visit ended, the
siblings would board the street-
car, holding each other's hand
during the ride. Beatrice would
almost always cry and plead with
her brother not to make her go
back.
Then they would walk to the
door of the orphanage, a massive
brick structure then located on
Burlingame and Petoskey. Louis
would watch his sister walk in-
side.
"I would walk back to the
streetcar and cry the whole way
home," he recalled. "It wasn't a
happy time."
T
he buildings are all
gone.
The site of the Detroit
Hebrew Orphans Home
is now a parking lot for the Amer-
ican Red Cross Detroit head-
quarters. The Canfield site of the
first infants' home is a parking
structure for the Wayne State
University medical school.
At the front of the second in-
fants' home on Mack is a broken
tree and a sidewalk that leads
nowhere. The lot is empty, sand-
wiched between two abandoned
buildings.
In the neighborhood where the
Jewish Children's Home was lo-
cated, boys and girls no longer lie
on the side lawn and daydream
about life with their families. In-
stead, a heap of abandoned tires
is in a pile next to a whale-shaped
hump of dirt. A tattered baby car-
riage sticks up out of the mud and
young teens smoke from a pipe
as they hang out in a car nearby.
All that is left of life on the in-
side of the home is the memories
of those who lived there. D
