Guest Conductor
Leads Symphony
Former Michiganian Marek
Rachelski, of DePaul University's
conducting faculty, will serve as
guest conductor for the Southfield
Symphony Orchestra's fifth sub-
scription concert of the season on
Sunday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at
the Southfield Civic Center
Pavilion.
Mr. Rachelski was raised in
the metropolitan Detroit area and
was awarded his undergraduate
and graduate degrees from
Wayne State University prior to
receiving his master's degree
in conducting from Chicago's
Northwestern University.
The concert is being dedicated
to Clark Eastham, founder of the
SSO in 1952, who died earlier
this month one day before his
88th birthday. In 1984, the Michi-
gan Legislature enacted a reso-
lution declaring him "The Dean
of Michigan Composers." A clas-
sical composer who created more
than 135 works that were played
and recorded by the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra, Mr. Eastham
taught at Wayne State Univer-
sity and the University of Michi-
gan before retiring in 1981. From
1963-65, he also was commen-
tator for WQRS-FM's "Great
Music" program.
