New Nursing Home
Plans In Progress
RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WAITER
Representatives of the Jewish
Federation and United Jewish
Foundation sought approval Feb.
28 from the West Bloomfield
Township Planning Commission
for a skilled-nursing home on the
Maple-Drake Jewish Communi-
ty Campus.
If approved, the plan would
centralize most Jewish eldercare
services in West Bloomfield.
The plan proposes construc-
tion of a skilled nursing facility
on the southwest portion of the
campus. The building would
stand between Maple Road and
Fleischman Residence/Hecht-
man Federation Apartments, to
form a complex providing Jewish
services for independent and as-
sisted living to the aged.
"Our goal is to provide a con-
tinuum of care to the elderly and
make them feel part of the com-
munity," Michael Perlman, at-
torney for and member of
Federation's Maple-Drake Land
Use Committee, told the plan-
ning commissioners. "We believe
that this plan addresses these ob-
jectives in a very functional and
aesthetically pleasing way."
Federation officials are work-
ing with the Health Care and Re-
tirement Corporation, an
Ohio-based firm that runs 130
nursing homes throughout the
country. If plans are approved, it
is likely that HCR will design, de-
velop and operate the new Jew-
ish nursing home.

The home will contain 165
state-licensed beds.
HCR's blueprints for the new
home show a one-story building
with a residential, masonry fa-
cade of textured brown brick.
Plans include heavy landscaping
to beautify the area and shield it
from traffic on Maple Road.
"We've tried to get away from
the apartment look, the institu-
tion look," said Paul Sieben,
HCR's vice president for devel-
opment.
The proposed facility includes
units for Alzheimer's patients,
sub-acute care, as well as phys-
ical, rehabilitative and speech
therapy. It has two courtyards,
several lounges and two kitchens
for kosher food preparation.
All rooms will be private or
semi-private (two people). The fa-
cility will accept private pay,
