"Other kids come really pre-
pared, with their lap top corn-
puters and things like that. They
are really competitive," Nechama
said.
Kathy Sklar, a high-school
teacher at Akiva, told the stu-
dents that winning was not the
goal.
"She just said, 'Go, do your best
but have fun,"' Nechama said.
"That's what I did."
Ms. Sklar said she was proud
of the students who competed
this year.
"They all did very well," she
said. "They were competing
against other kids who are just
as bright and very aggressive.

ident and as a member of the Na-
tional Council of Synagogue
Youth. She also assists develop-
mentally impaired children
through Yachad and teaches
teen-agers about the Jewish view
of sex for the Michigan Jewish
AIDS Coalition.
