(the communists) just crushed
into the ground."
There are records of Jews in
Poland since the 9th century CE,
with more than 3,350,000 resid-
ing in the country before the war.
About 11 percent, or 369,000, sur-
vived the Holocaust.
In many cities, much of what
once comprised a vibrant Jewish
community remains, albeit in a
decrepit state. There are syna-
gogues and apartment complex-
es, mivkahs and yeshivot. Polish
authorities are eager to see them
rebuilt and refurbished. The
problem is simply securing in-
vestment dollars.
"Our goal is to get everyone in-
terested in this to pool their re-
sources into one entity," Mr.
Walawender said. "We can't
promise that everybody will get
the exact parcel (that he lost to
the Nazis). What we can do is get
a place in Cracow for someone
who lost property in Cracow."
Typical of the development
project is Kazimierz, a historic
district outside Cracow. The area
was home to seven synagogues
including the Wysoka and the Re-
muh, namesake of the famed
16th-century Rabbi Moses Isser-
les Remuh.
Virtually all the Jewish pop-
ulation of Kazimierz — estimat-
ed at about 70,000 before the war
— was murdered at Auschwitz
and Birkenau. Remnants of the
Kazimierz Ghetto, established by
the Nazis, can still be seen, and
in fact served as a backdrop for
scenes in Steven Spielberg's
Yet it is not only painful sym-
bols of the past that are still ex-
tant. The Stara Synagogue, built
in the 15th century, today func-
tions as a Jewish museum. Ren-
ovation has begun on other
synagogues, and commemorative
plaques and programs have been
established in memory of some of
Cracow's famous residents, in-
cluding artist Bruno Schultz and
poet Mordechai Gebirtig.
(Schultz was shot on the street
by a Nazi officer. Gebirtig was
killed, together with his wife and
two daughters, by the Nazis in
June 1942.)
Yet for development in Cra-
cow, Kazimierz and other Polish
towns to continue, the country
must have support.
Right now, Mr. Walawender
and Mr. Traison are in negotia-
tions with European investment
groups to help underwrite the
cost of renovations throughout
Poland, so as to keep costs for
Jewish individuals to a mini-
mum. So far, interest in the pro-
J ect has been strong, Mr.
Walawender said. ❑

Valued by Sotheby's at be-
tween $6,000 and $8,000, the
work is one of a number of
pieces with Jewish themes by

an Italian immigrant. Rizzoni
was born in 1836 in Riga and
died in 1902 in Rome. His
other works include Sermon Alexander Rinoni's "The Rabbi."
