triumph over New Jersey on the
morning of Feb. 19. That set the
stage for a Feb. 19 evening show-
down with Pittsburgh, which
also was 2-0 in the four-team
pool.
Five minutes into the game,
played in front of a packed gym of
about 350 fans, Detroit's top scor-
er and point guard, Michael
Florkowski, injured his head div-
ing for a loose ball and he needed
16 stitches to close the cut.
Less than two minutes later,
backcourt partner Nelson Dunn
tore ligaments in his ankle. He
was finished for the night and the
tournament.
In the second quarter, Detroit
starting forwards Micheal
Sanders and Brian Tobin were
sidelined by leg cramps and fouls,
respectively. Sanders played off-
and-on the rest of the game and
Tobin ended up seeing action in
about half the contest.

In the middle of the second
period, Detroit founded itself
down by 14 points. But by half-
time, it was only 28-25 for Pitts-
burgh. Detroit ended up winning
60-48.
Jonah Ansel, whose grandfa-
ther died the night before the
game, topped Detroit with 18
points. Marion Hodges, Dunn's
replacement, had 11 points and
Scott Berger had 10.
"Jonah normally scores three
or four points a game," Bershad
said. "By the end of this game, he
was crying.
"God touched us. That's all I
can say. Afterward, our kids
were getting hugs from their
host families and Pittsburgh's
fans were cheering us. They
knew they had just seen some-
thing special."
Detroit wasn't out of miracles.
Down by 17 points to Cleveland
in the third quarter of the Feb. 20
championship game, Bershad's
bunch rebounded for a 62-58 vic-
tory.
Tobin led the way with 19
points. Berger had 11 and Ansel
had nine. Tobin and Berger
were named first-team All-
Stars.
Detroit finished the season
with a 14-0 record, Bershad's sec-
ond perfect campaign. His team
also was 14-0 three years ago.
Rounding out the 1994-95 De-
troit roster were Jordan Field,
Ryan Malerman, Evan Rice, Jeff
Schmidt, Mark Tarica and Jason
Wexelman. Tony Sanders was the
