vidual wrestling meet for AARON

School and STEVE SIMON
and JEREMY LEWIN of Birm-
ingham Groves High School.
The four qualified for the big
show by finishing in the top four
in their weight class in the re-
gional held Feb. 25 at Troy. It
will be their first trip to the state
meet, which will be held Friday,
March 10, and Saturday, March
11, at the Kellogg Center in Bat-
tle Creek.

Berkley's Kobernick and Gitler
are both juniors. At the region-
al, Kobernick finished third at 112
pounds and Gitler was second at
172 pounds.
Kobernick owns a 33-12 record.
Gitler, who is 34-9, has won four
of his six matches in state com-
petition. He's lost only to Aaron
Hilgendorf of Hazel Park, who is
undefeated and ranked No. 2 in
the state in his weight class.
Simon and Lewin of Groves
both finished fourth at Troy, Si-
mon at 100 pounds and Lewin at
275 pounds. Making the state
meet was quite an accomplish-
ment for Simon, a sophomore,
who wrestled with a torn triceps
muscle in his left arm.
As for Lewin, "he wrestled the
best of our four state meet quali-
fiers," said Groves coach Andrew
Wilson. "Jeremy took on some
good opponents at the regional
and he stayed right with them.
Making the state meet as a junior
was very important for Jeremy."
Simon owns a 33-14 record, but
he's 16-5 at 100 pounds. Lewin is
36-12. Of his 12 losses, 10 have
been against fellow state meet
qualifiers.
