The Journey Begins Tryouts start for Detroit Maccabi teams that will be headed to Houston and Los Angeles in August. STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER MARCH 3, 1995 I 78 ryouts have begun for the Detroit teams that will compete in this summer's 1995 Jew- ish Community Cen- ters Maccabi Youth Games. Boys and girls soccer and boys and girls softball tryouts were held Sunday at the Maple/Drake branch of the JCC in West Bloomfield. Meetings for swim- ming, water polo, track, golf and gymnastics took place Thursday at Maple/Drake along with a vol- leyball tryout. Detroit athletes ages 12-16 as of Tuesday, Aug. 1, 1995, will compete in Houston and Los An- geles in August. Some 600-700 athletes, some from outside the United States, are expected to take part in the Maccabi Games in both cities.
