In Budapest, the largest Jew-
ish community in Central Eu-
rope, numbering about
80,000,one feels the momentum
of an expanding Jewish life
through the Chosen Tour. Our
guide, a warm and smiling
woman, Eva, began by inviting
us into the great Synagogue of
Dohany Street, opened in 1859,
surviving 27 hits during the war.
We looked up to its soaring ceil-
ing bracketed by tiers of seats to
see carpenters and craftsmen
busily restoring its former ele :
gance.
It was sobering to learn that
after Hungary's rural Jewish
communities were decimated,
180,000 of Budapest's Jews were
crammed into 2,000 houses of the
ghetto while 20,000 were packed
into the synagogue. The aston-
ishingly large number of Hun-
garian Jews annihilated in the
last year of the war seemed to
heap tragedy upon tragedy.
The puzzling fact that the
Russian army liberated the Jew-
ish ghetto a month before they
liberated the remainder of the
city, thereby saving these last
remnants, makes one pause to
question why.
To all those who question or
deny the Holocaust, we can only
say take a journey to Eastern eu-
rope and see and feel for yourself.
To pass down to our children a
legacy of what being human in
the fullest sense means.

Israel Is Topic
Of Meetings

Participants in Michigan Mira-
cle Mission II will have an op-
portunity to learn more about
Israel at education meetings
March 1 and 2.
Daniel Rossing of the Melitz
Centers for Jewish-Zionist Edu-
cation in israel will speak on "Is-
rael Among the Nations."
Director of the Melitz Center for
Christian Encounter with Israel,
he formerly directed the De-
partment for Christian Commu-
nities in the Israel Ministry of
Religious Affairs. He is active in
interfaith circles in Jerusalem
and has published numerous ar-
ticles about Christian minorities
in Israel and the middle East and
on interfaith relations.
The final speaker in the series
will be Avaraham Infeld, Melitz
founder, president and CEO. On
March 27 and 28, Mr. Infeld
served as director general of the
Gesher educational affiliates and
Sholom Harmen Institute.
