grew up in Toronto. "I see politics
as a way to help people."
Shellie Berlin, 27, has a simi-
lar legislative job with Republi-
can Rep. Dick Chrysler of
Brighton. Her areas of expertise
are in banking, insurance, secu-
rities and taxes.
Ms. Berlin, a Memphis native,
went to Washington wanting to
work in the area of foreign affairs,
but because banking was a hot is-
sue she eventually landed a job with
the Senate Banking Committee.
Part of her current duties in-
clude meeting with constituents
and keeping Rep. Chrysler
abreast of their concerns.

"My work gives
me an opportunity
to combine my
commitment
to Jewish and
Republican issues."

Dan Senor

Providing constituent services
takes up most of Ellen Offen's
time, too. As Rep. Lynn River's dis-
trict director, Ms. Offen acts as a
liaison to the Ann Arbor Democ-
rat and helps both the citizens and
the communities in the 13th Dis-
trict access the federal government
if they are having difficulties.
Mr. Senor often answers ques-
tions from Jewish groups whose
current concerns, he said, are not
focused on Israel as much as they
are on domestic policy issues like
school prayer, a balanced budget
amendment and welfare.
Whether it's working in Wash-
ington or operating a district of-
fice, this group of Jewish
congressional staffers said they
love their work.

"Washington is an unusual
place to be," said Gloria Andrews,
an office administrator for Rep.
Chrysler and a Troy native.
"Working on the Hill cannot be
compared to anything in the pub-
lic sector. It's a great experience
I would not trade for anything.
Although I'm not part of the leg-
islative staff, it's neat to be in
Washington where members of
Congress make decisions that af-
fect so many people."
Ms. Offen, who was once an
elected official herself when she
served on the Ann Arbor school
board, enjoys the gratification she
receives from helping people.
As for working for a congres-
sional member of the minority
party,
"You have to be upbeat," Ms.
Offen said. "You can't be down
and frustrated. You have to feel
like your energy is making a dif-
ference. Lynn is a great person to
work for and we're excited about
what we are doing."
One reason Ms. Berlin finds
living and working in Washing-
ton exciting is because "our lo-
cal news is everyone's national
news." ❑
