Call The Jewish News 354-5959 RABBI IRWIN GRONER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS he Torah recounts the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness in a • spirit of fervor and cre- ativity. Directing this activity was not Moses, who had domi- nated the scene until then, but someone whom we meet for the first time: Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur. Who is this Bezalel to whom Moses entrusts the job of build- ing a sanctuary for the Lord? While scripture does not tell us much about Bezalel and his fam- ily background, the rabbis of the Midrash supplement the missing links, providing us with the iden- tity of Bezalel's forebears. The rabbinic tradition advises us that Bazalel's great-grand- mother was none other than Miri- am, the sister of Moses and Aaron. How meaningful that the great- grandson of Miriam, who watched baby Moses floating on the river, who looked with confidence and resolution into the remote un- known future should now be the one who is called upon to build a sanctuary for the Lord, an ac- complishment which marks the summit of the spiritual redemp- tion of the people from slavery. Bezalel, however, was chosen not only because of his ancestry. The text describes his remark- able talent. Thus, we are told "And Moses said unto the chil- dren of Israel: See, the Lord has called by name, Bezalel... of the tribe of Judah. And He has filled him with the spirit of God, in wis- dom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship..." The commentators on the Torah were perplexed by the ap- parent redundancy of the word see. It seems to be superfluous, for the sentence would have been complete without that word. A leading scholar of our gen- eration offers an insightful ex- planation, which teaches that when a person is blessed by the Almighty with special talents and abilities, he should not waste them or put them to selfish ends, but should employ them in the service of God and his fellow man. When the Almighty com- manded Moses to build a taber- nacle as a meeting place for the Jewish people and their creator and outlined the intricate designs and rare fabrics and materials that had to be used, the problem was to find a suitable artist to for- mulate the plans, to make the de- T Irwin Groner is senior rabbi of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. sign and to supervise the work. God said to Moses, who spoke to the people, "See! there is Bezalel who is qualified to perform this task to perfection. He is endowed with the gifts of brilliance and ge- nius. Appoint him to undertake this effort and suceess is assured." The learning of the scholar, the wisdom of the sage, the talent of the artist, the brilliance of the writer, the leadership of an indi- vidual , are special gifts of God that must not be permitted to go to waste. They are to be used by the recipients of these blessings for the good and welfare of the community. Shabbat Vayakhel: Exodus 35:1-38:230 II Kings 12:1-17. This thought is stated clearly and succinctly in the succeeding verse "And He put in his (Beza- lel's) heart that he may teach..." Unlike many gifted artists who are unable to teach their skill to others or simply prefer to keep it all to themselves, Bezalel had the ability, as well as the winning- ness, to instruct others, a char- acteristic which the Torah recognizes as especially praise- worthy. Judaism stresses the idea that a human being is a messenger of the Eternal One; that his talents and aptitudes do not belong to him alone, but were given him to be shared; that everything which is appealing and attractive, bright and inspiring, should be em- ployed to fill the lives of others with grace, beauty and warmth. Fortunate is the people blessed with gifted sons and daughters who know what they are quali- fied to achieve and to create and are willing to dedicate a goodly portion of their special abilities and talents to the service of their people and their faith. ❑ Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thurs- day, eight days prior to issue date.
