reciprocal," says Friedman. She
sees Bradwell's most significant
legacy as the body of legislation
directly traceable to her: specifi-
cally, the laws allowing married
women equal custody rights to
their children and the law that
let married women keep their
own earnings, which meant that
those earnings were no longer the
property of their husbands.
Friedman was thrilled when
notified of Bradwell's induction
into the Hall of Fame. Bradwell
was nominated by California
lawyer Charlotte Bartell, a board
member, who, in a telephone in-
terview, admitted she had never
heard of Bradwell or recognized
her contributions as a women's
rights activist before she read
Friedman's book.
"I don't think most people were
familiar with Myra Bradwell
even when I nominated her," says
Bartell, "until I submitted . . . a
copy of Friedman's book." ❑
