their music, advising Berklee ad-
ministrators about the latest
ways technology can assist the
teaching and learning process.
He also accepts performance
engagements, using a keyboard
to provide input into the com-
puter. He lets the computer play
back what he has keyed in and
plays along with a guitar.
When he travels to lecture and
perform, he takes a computer, at
least one keyboard synthesizer
and a rack of specialized proces-
sors as well as a guitar.
Some of his tours are directly
related to his job at Berklee be-
cause the school works with
schools in other countries to help
them develop technology. Other
engagements are based on his
reputation.
He already has been scheduled
to speak next January at the Uni-
versity of Michigan and Wayne
State University, where he also
will perform for the students.
"One issue that shouldn't be
confused is musicianship," said
Mr. Mash, who has performed
publicly with his mother only
once — at a friend's wedding.
"Synthesizers and computers
are tools with which musicians
create. In the hands of a skillful
musician, a synthesizer can give
a musical performance as well as
any symphonic instrument.
"The symphonic instrument
doesn't give the performance ei-
ther. It's the musician.
"There's more to learn about
music than ever before. Musi-
cians still need to have an un-
derstanding of theory, harmony,
arranging and orchestration as
well as the ability to play an in-
strument. Now, however, they
also need to know about the tech-
nology." ❑
