At Glassman Oldsmobile in
Southfield, respect was the dri-
ving force for George Glassman
as he joined the business estab-
lished by his father, Jerome.
"I think each family is differ-
ent, and I happen to be extreme-
ly fortunate because my father
never criticized me for my mis-
takes," said the car dealer, who
holds a law degree but decided
not to practice that profession.
"He always encouraged me, fo-
cused on the positive and gave
me confidence that things would
work out."
When George Glassman joined
the business in 1980 as it was en-
tering its second decade of oper-
ation, he found some dissension
among longtime staff members
who did not feel comfortable with

the changes he was making.
He believes he came to terms
with those difficult times because
his father let him find his own
way.
"Family is the only thing that
matters to him," George Glass-
man said about his dad, and
what he believes represents a
Jewish tradition. "I have sons,
and I would be very happy if they
choose to work with me."
David Gold and Jason Gold are
another father-son team. To-
gether they operate Accurate
Parking Lot Services and Al's As-
phalt Paving Co.
Working out of a home office
in West Bloomfield, they employ
35 people who put the markings
and signs on parking lots and
resurface driving areas.
"I believe a blood relative is al-
ways more loyal and will go the
extra nine yards," David Gold
said. "It's a dream when it
works."
Mr. Gold also likes the idea of
the longevity associated with a
family business. He thinks that
it's nice to know that a business
can continue through children in-
stead of closing or being sold one
day.
David Gold took on the re-
sponsibilities of his own firm nine
years ago after working with his
uncle in the steel business. He
thinks that putting himself and
his son on the job sites can help
avoid worker resentment, which
he sees as a possible negative in
family businesses.
David Gold's wife, Judith, has
served as a consultant for Accu-
rate. Chairman of the computer
sciences department at Mary-
grove College, she used her tech-
nical skills to set up the software
for her husband and son.
In the capacity of consultant,
she steps back to look at the fam-
ily business she knows best.
"I think the biggest thing is be-
ing supportive," she said. "I think
the bond of working together
strengthens the family relation-
ship, and success comes from a
shared dedication to build." ❑
