English. "I'm so emotional every
minute of each reunion. People
are returning to Frankfurt with
all their difficult history, yet they
still come back. And we feel very
grateful that they do come back."
"People said to us, 'How can
you go back to Germany?' " says
Ruth Wolfsthal. "But the Ger-
mans we met appreciate so much
that we have come back. This is
another generation,and we don't
have such bad feelings for them."
Ruth Wolfsthal, a native of
Hamburg where her grandfather
was a well known rabbi,left Ger-
many with her parents and sister
in 1936, when she was nine. The
family emigrated to Jerusalem.
Similarly, her husband Felix
left his native Frankfurt in 1935
and settled in Haifa. After they
met and married in Israel, Ruth
and Felix raised three children
and now have 17 grandchildren.
None of them has ever been to
Germany.
Neither had Rochelle Agat-
stein's son and daughter — until
now. She herself had not re-
turned since she left Frankfurt
as a child in 1938. She hesitat-
ed and held back at first when
she received an invitation to the
reunion, but her son and daugh-
ter persuaded her to accept.
"They wanted to see where I
came from, where I was born,"
says Ms. Agatstein, who lives in
California and is attending the
reunion with her daughter, Bea
PeH, a lawyer, and her son,
Ernest Agatstein, a physician,
both from New York.
"It's good that I came," says
Ms. Agatstein. "It gave me a
chance to meet with friends from
my childhood." On the first day,
for example, she recognized a
childhood friend she had not seen
in more than 50 years. They've
spent hours reminiscing.
"Every night they talk for
hours and hours in the hotel lob-
by," related her daughter, Bea
PeH. "They talk about their teach-
ers, they remember all sorts of
experiences. They'll never let go
of their anger about what hap-
pened in Germany, but they also
have fond memories of their
childhood. That's one thing the
Nazis couldn't take away from
them."
Like Rochelle Agatstein, Ruth
Awner also hesitated before ac-
cepting the invitation to come to
Frankfurt. "I had a lot of soul
searching to do," says Ms. Awner,
a social worker in New York. As
a child, she left Frankfurt on Sep-
tember 1, 1938, and never re-
turned until now. "I had to
convince myself that I could do
this emotionally.
"I'm glad I had the opportuni-
ty to come back to my roots, and
I never would have done it except
for this program," she says.
"It's been a memorable experi-
ence!" ❑
