thing but your work. When you
get home, then you begin to ab-
sorb the impact of what you've
been doing all day."
Religion is crucial. "A person
is a body and a soul, and when I
do this work I feel like I'm tend-
ing to people's souls, and that I'm
working with my own soul," said
Eliahu Brand.
Besides going out to terror
scenes, the men of Chesed Shel
Emet gather body parts of car
crash victims, suicide jumpers,
and others whom death has left
in pieces.
The volunteers never used to
discuss what they'd been
through. Then last summer, in a
training course with a psycholo-
gist, they learned it was healthy,
maybe even necessary, to talk.
Now they do talk, but only with
each other. "If you can't leave the
terror outside the door when you
get home, then you can't do this
work. You cannot allow it to af-
fect your family," said Rabbi
Gelbshtein. Their wives and chil-
dren know not to ask questions.
Rabbi Gelbshtein could think
of only a few members who are
not religious. He advertises for
volunteers in religious newspa-
pers, and word of mouth spreads
in religious communities.
"We're not doing it only for the
sake of the dead, but also for the
sake of the living, the families of
the victims," said Benzion Oiring.
"It means a lot to them that their
people's remains are gathered
and buried properly.
"We also help the forensic ex-
perts make the identifications
sooner," Mr. Oiring continued.
This means that for many peo-
ple, the agony of waiting to hear
if a missing family member is
dead, wounded or safe is that
much shorter.
The volunteers not only search
for the remains of terrorvictims,
but, in cases of suicide bombings,
of the terrorists themselves. In
late December, a Hamas mem-
ber blew himself up near the
Jerusalem bus station. He had
intended to kill Jews, but killed
only himself. The people of
Chesed Shel Emet searched for
his body parts with their usual
diligence, Rabbi Gelbshtein said.
In the past, Rabbi Gelbshtein
has not asked for government
funds or private contributions,
but now he says the organization
needs money for a car equipped
with ladders, searchlights and
other equipment. Also, members
need equipment vests, beepers
and walkie-talkies.
"If we had $15,000, that would
set us up for a year, and we would
only need about $5,000 for each
year after that," he said.
Anyone wishing to contribute
money or equipment can contact
Rabbi Gelbshtein at: Chesed Shel
Emet, POB 5278, Jerusalem, Is-
rael. El
