decided to begin by marketing it
as a health-food product, thus
side-stepping the lengthy toxici-
ty-testing required for new drugs.
Despite minimal advertising,
Sambucol sold 30,000 bottles dur-
ing its first year, and Dr. Mum-
cuoglu received endless calls and
letters telling her what she al-
ready knew: that Sambucol cures
influenza within a couple of days.
Meanwhile, the research con-
tinued. "Our next priority was to
see whether Sambucol was ef-
fective against all strains of the
influenza virus," Dr. Mumcuoglu
says. "It takes about 10 years
years to develop immunity to
each new strain, but different
variants always emerge. Re-
searchers believe they develop
through fusion in animals."
One strain, for example, is
thought to have come through
farm pigs, contaminated with one
influenza virus from farmers, and
with a second from wild ducks.
Inside the pig-host, the two virus-
es fused into a new strain to
which there was no immunity —
and an influenza epidemic was
underway. Dr. Mumcuoglu and
her team have tested Sambucol
against seven different influen-
za strains — Beijing, Singapore,
Hong Kong, Ann Arbor, Texas,

Panama and Yamagata - -and
found it effective against all of
them.With Sambucol a proven
anti-viral agent, the search has
now widened. Hadassah's On-
cology Laboratory has been test-
ing the elderberry ingredient
against certain cancers, in vit-
ro. In a series of experiments,
they have found that it stimu-
lates the immune response. In
Hadassah's Virology Lab, it has
been seen to inhibit the AIDS
virus. A clinical trial is now be-
ing set up, adding Sambucol to
other treatments given HIV-pos-
itive patients. Researchers are
also getting encouraging prelim-
inary results with Sambucol
against the herpes and Epstein-
Barr viruses.
Even though Sambucol is, of-
ficially, still no more than a
"health food," interest is snow-
balling overseas. Meanwhile, in
Israel, more and more people al-
ready know what the Health
Ministry has yet to concede: the
Sambucol is a powerful and ef-
fective remedy for influenza,
colds, fever, malaise, and all the
other unexplained aches and
pains which your family doctor
dismisses as "a virus." El

The conference, however, was
about much more than making
personal contacts.
'What is called Jewish studies
in the United States doesn't real-
ly exist here yet," said Lawrence
Schiffinan, a professor of Hebrew
and Judaic Studies at New York
University. "What we are really
here to discuss is what we can do
to develop this."

THE
Jewish Studies
Set For Russia
Moscow (JTA) — About 100 aca-
demics from the former Soviet
Union, Israel and the United
States came together to share
their scholarship and strategize
for the future ofJewish studies in
Russia.
The meeting was held at The
Moscow Center for University
Teaching ofJewish Civilization.
"The idea is to encourage the
teaching ofJewish civilization in
universities," said Ralph Goldman
of the American Jewish Joint-
Distribution Committee, which
sponsored the event.
The conference covered myri-
ad topics, such as the Israeli econ-
omy, the history of Russia's first
Jewish intellectual movement
and questions on faith and sci-
ence.
Practical seminars were also
held on how the newly formed
professors who are teaching Jew-
ish subjects in other institutions
within the former Soviet Union
could work with the Moscow cen-
ter.
Participants said Jewish teach-
ing material and textbooks were
badly needed.
At the conference were acade-
mics from cities across Russia,
Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus,
as well as the new Israeli ambas-
sador to Russia, Aliza Shenhar.
