Shalom Detroit Program Set Shalom Detroit, a program of the Women's Divison of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan De- troit, invites all newcomers to the Detroit area to a get-together on Feb. 23, 9:15-11:30 a.m. at the Janice Charach Epstein Mu- seum in the Jewish Community Center, West Bloomfield. Shalom Detroit provides an opportunity for new residents to learn more about their new com- munity and to make some new friends in the process. Guests will also have a chance to tour the Center. How Six Days Can Last A Lifetime New Americans Cultural Series Jewish Experiences for Families (J.E.F.F.), a department of the Agency for Jewish Education, and the Jewish Community Cen- ter, will present a three-part pro- gram titled "Jewish Cultural Arts Club Series" for new Amer- icans. Its goal is to enrich Jew- ish experiences through the use of cultural activities. The first part of the program will feature a tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts. A docent will provide a general tour of the DIA highlighting Jewish related works of art and artists. This first event is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bus transportation will be pro- vided from the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center. The second program will be held on Sunday, March 19, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Commu- nity Center. Zvi Gitelman, an author and professor of politi- cal science at the University of Michigan, will address the issue of "A Century of Russian/Jewish Emigration (1884-1994): Di- mensions, Motivations, and Achievements." There will be an afterglow with Professor Gitel- man in the atrium. The final event will take place on Sunday, April 9, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center. Opera soloist Irina Lechtman will perform songs in Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish. Following the performance, there will be a tour of the Janice Charach Ep- stein Museum Gallery.
