I think that after communism,
fundamentalism is the greatest
threat to civilization and peace.

What do you need [PLO
leader Yassir] Arafat to
do to enable the peace
process...
To take a clear position against
terror and terrorists.

Hasn't he been doing that
repeatedly in his public
statements lately?
It's not enough to do it in
his public statements. He has
to do it in written terms. I'm
talking about putting to trial
people who commit acts of
violence. Disarming people who
carry weapons with the inten-
tion of terrorizing. We really
would like to see that, while
there maybe are as many opin-
ions as they wish in Gaza and
Jericho, there must be one au-
thority and one rifle. You cannot
have every group of people hav-
ing rifles.

—Shirnon Peres

In contrast to Israel's rela-
tionship with the PLO and
Mr. Arafat, the relationship
with Jordan and King Hus-
sein seems to be very warm.
Can you tell us about your re-
lationship with the king?
It's a long story. You know,
I reached an agreement with
the king back in 1987 back in
London, and I regret that this
was broken by the [Likud] par-
ty in Israel. If this would hap-
pen, it would have saved a lot of
time. It would spare the intifa-
da. I always thought the king
was serious in his wish to make
peace. For many years people
were laughing at me, because of
what used to be called the Jor-
danian option. Now the Jordan-
ian option became the Jordanian
reality.

The term separation has
become part of the lexicon
politically. Some say that
means moving to a Palestin-
ian state. Do you interpret it
that way as well?
I think eventually there will
be a Jordanian and Palestinian
confederation and they will
be our neighbors. There's
no sense for us to run their lives.
I don't suggest a Palestinian
state. ❑
