Jersusalem (JTA) — Six Israelis were arrested in connection with the theft of some 90 ancient man- uscripts valued at $330 million from the National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia. The men were apprehended by police after Russian investigators passed on evidence implicating them in the theft. Israel Television reported that the manuscripts were stolen in December. Russian police got hold of the ancient documents be fore the suspects were able to smuggle them out of the country. Based on the questioning of the suspects in Russia and other ev- idence, the Israeli suspects, all ment in their 40s from the Tel Aviv, Bat Yam and Haifa areas, allegedly helped plan the break- in. They then were supposed to help sell the stolen manuscripts. Entertainment • Agency • at drastically reduced prices! GLANTZ • Certified Mohel LO Cr) CD ti FEBRUARY Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian police detained 45 supporters of the Democratic Front for the Lib- eration of Palestine after the group claimed responsibility for a terror attack in the Gaza Strip. Palestine Liberation Organi- zation Chairman Yassir Arafat said the roundup of DFLP sup- porters was part of an ongoing fight against "fanatic and ex- tremist forces." The DFLP is part of a 10-mem- ber Damascus-based alliance of groups militantly opposed to the Israeli-Palestinian peace initia- tive. Leaders of the group said in a statement Monday that a unit of the Red Brigades Star, the group's military wing, had am- bushed a civilian convoy that same day which was escorting two fuel tankers from Israel to Gaza. Yevgeny Dromov, an Israeli se- curity guard who was killed in the attack, was buried in the Ashkelon cemetery Tuesday. "We will not permit these groups to harm, not only the Is- raelis, but also the Palestinians and the peace process," Mr. Arafat told reporters. Meanwhile, Israeli officials de- cided that trucks would no longer deliver gasoline to Gaza, but would drop it off at the Nahal Oz crossing at the Israeli border. Israeli security sources re- portedly said they had estab- lished new procedures governing the entry of Israeli citizens into areas of Gaza. "We are not encouraging [Is- raeli] citizens to enter the strip," Police Minister Moshe Shahal said during a tour of Israeli set- tlements in Gaza.
