The Israeli Museum recently re-
ceived a rare collection of mid-
19th century photographs of
Jerusalem and Eretz Yisrael
which had languished for a cen-
tury in a storeroom in the Unit-
ed States.
The collection of 130 glass neg-
atives and prints comprised a col-
lection by John Mendel Diness, a
Jewish resident of Jerusalem
who later converted to Chris-
tianity and moved to the United
States to become a minister.
The discovery was made three
years ago at a yard sale in the
Midwest by photographer John
Barnier, who immediately rec-
ognized its value.
The glass negatives are now
being catalogued, with an exhib-
it and book on the photographs
planned for the coming year.

Shulamit Aloni, Israel minister
of communications, science and
arts, headed an official delegation
on a trip to South Korea, China
and India.
The tour coincided with per-
formances by the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra, heard by an
estimated 600 million in China
alone.
As a result of the meetings be-
tween the Israeli delegation and
their hosts, an agreement was
reached with South Korea and
programs of cultural and scien-
tific exchange were secured with
China and India.

Awards Honor
Israeli Films

Israel recently hosted its fifth an-
nual film Academy Awards at the
Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv.
This year, 12 Israeli films com-
peted in 14 award categories.
Winners were selected by a 500-
member academy, comprising in-
dustry professionals in all fields.
The big winner was Hanna
Azulai Hasfari's Sh'hur ("Spell"
in Moroccan), which took best
