Masons. The event was arranged
after a Jewish Mason saw the
band at last year's Klezmer
Dance Party in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Alexander's avocation
closely relates to his main career
as a gerontologist. Just as he
gives a new flavor to seasoned
music, he works at studying el-
derly mobility to understand how
new techniques might enhance
the way seniors walk, get out of
bed and chairs, and avoid falls.
"Most of our music charts are
computerized," Dr. Alexander
said. "Being a researcher, I de-
pend on computerization for sta-
tistics, processing, spreadsheeting
and telecommunications, and I've
used these skills to make the
band well-organized and highly
technical."
Tangos, waltzes,
rock and Jewish
music swing for the
band.
While he has good times with
the music, he has a serious atti-
tude toward it as well.
"I have a vision of how Jewish
music should be," said the enter-
taining doctor, who plays klezmer
at home for his wife and three
young daughters.
"I feel a lot of people consider
Jewish music an anachronism.
They hear it in synagogues or in
renaissance klezmer groups and
think that's all there is to it.
"I believe we've got to get back
to celebrating our life-cycle events
with Jewish music, not neces-
sarily Jewish music as we grew
up with it. Maybe it has to take
on elements of our current cul-
ture.
"I try to bring all those ele-
ments into Jewish tunes. I've
nothing against the top 40 mu-
sic, but it seems when you have
a Jewish life-cycle celebration,
you should have something in-
trinsically Jewish about the mu-
sic used to celebrate it.
"We celebrate events by say-
ing blessings, and we also should
celebrate with the same kind of
music." ❑
Neil Alexander and his
Klezmer Fusion Band will per-
form between 7:30 and 11 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 18, at Washtenaw
Community College's Morris
Lawrence Building. For infor-
mation and tickets, call the JCC
in Washthnaw County, (313) 971-
0990. Tickets also can be obtained
at the Maple-Drake JCC, (810)
661-1000.
