White Lake Township el-
ementary-school teacher
who filed suit because she
was not permitted to take
off work to observe Jewish holi-
days reached an out-of-court set-
tlement last month.
School officials agreed to allow
Edith Williams, 47, to miss work
during Jewish holidays without
pay, an offer she made before the
lawsuit was filed, according to
her attorney Catherine Farrell,
Ms. Williams, who underwent
a Reform conversion to Judaism
several years ago, wanted to go
through an Orthodox conversion
but could not without being able

to observe the 13 holy days in the
Jewish calendar. Typically, six
or seven fall within the school
year.
Rabbi Chaim Bergstein of
Bais Chabad of Farmington Hills
is assisting Ms. Williams with
her conversion, which cannot be
completed until she can show she
is living in accordance with Jew-
ish law.
Now that the dispute is set-
tled, Ms. Williams can continue
with her conversion process.
"We are happy this matter is
resolved," said James H. Doyle,
superintendent of the Huron Val-
ley School District. "This was a
difficult issue with many gray ar-
eas. It's often hard to distinguish
where an obligation begins and
ends.
"We do not want to interfere
with religious practices but we
feel employees have a responsi-
bility to their job. We're just
pleased an agreement was
reached." ❑

Because the officers did not
witness the alleged fight, they
did not arrest the men but gave
them tickets for violating an or-
dinance forbidding assault and
battery. The violations carry the
same weight as if an arrest were
made.
City Prosecutor Gene Lum-
berg, after consulting with the
reported victim, agreed to drop
the charge against one of the
men.
The other, Menachem Shem-
toy, pleaded no contest to the or-
dinance violation and was given
a delayed sentence of one year.
A delayed sentence allows the
defendant a period of time to re-
deem himself for the court after
which time the court can provide
a sentence based on his conduct
during that time. ❑
