The Polish people who helped
me survive, at risk to their own
lives, kept it a secret from their
fellow citizens after the war. Then
it was, for many Poles, a disgrace
to have saved a Jew. In 1945-46,
Poland still had a Jewish prob-
lem: there were 225,000 Jews in
Poland at that point; most sur-
vived in the Soviet Union. In
194648, there were only 150,000
left, and in 1980, a mere 6,000
remained. Anti-Semitism was the
major reason for the exodus of the
Holocaust survivors from Poland.
On July 4, 1946, in my father's
hometown of Kielce, most of the
survivors were brutally murdered
by a Polish mob.
The first democratic presiden-
tial election in Poland was a con-
test between Prime Minister
Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Lech
Walesa. Mazowiecki, a prominent
Catholic layman, was "accused"
of having Jewish ancestors. Wale-
sa cleverly exploited these untrue
rumors by saying that people
should come out and reveal who
they are. Mazowiecki, even
though initially a favorite, lost
the election. There were 4,000
Jews at that point living in
Poland. Even though Poland has
virtually no Jews, it still has anti-
Semitism.

Adults who go to see a violent
movie do not need to play-act it
out in order to make sense of
what they have seen. Children
need to play-act anything they
have seen. It is their way of mak-
ing sense of what they have seen.
When this play-acting is a threat
to the social group the children
are in, what is the lesson caring
adults should learn?
We can make a difference. One
