Sempliner's Tuxedo World

Many Michiganians and their
friends are sharing work from
their private collections to help
Swords Into Plowshares Peace
Center honor printmaker Kathe
Kollwitz. An exhibit of her work
will open Friday, March 3 from
4-7 p.m. and continue through
May 25. The exhibit was sched-
uled to coincide with the 50th
anniversary of the artist's death,
April 22, 1945, a few days before
the end of World War II.
Ms. Kollwitz's time encom-
passed both world wars. The
death of her younger son, Peter,
in the early days of World War I,
propelled her evolution toward
Pacificism. She viewed all war as
a waste of precious human life.
Her subjects range from cele-
brating the joy of mother and
child to portraying the darkness
of death and separation. Her com-
passion, visually expressed, for
her fellow human beings is un-
doubtedly one reason why Hitler
"banned" her work from exhibi-
tion in her native Germany.
The exhibit at the Peace Cen-
ter includes over 35 prints as well
as books and biographical infor-
mation. Original prints, restrikes,
and reproductions will be on dis-
play and a gallery guide avail-
able. The exhibit has received
support from the Detroit Council
of the Arts and Michigan Coun-
cil for the Arts and Cultural Af-
fairs.
Swords Into Plowshares Peace
\ Center and Gallery is open Tues-
days, Thursdays, and Saturdays
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and other
hours by appointment. There is
no charge.
Swords Into Plowshares Peace
Center and Gallery is an art
gallery in downtown Detroit de-
voted to relating the power of the
arts to the quest for peace. A pro-
ject of Central United Methodist
Church, the Gallery is a member
/ of the International Network of
Peace Museums.
