Call 354-6060 Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestine liberation Organization Chair- man Yas.sir Arafat traveled to the Jordanian capital of Amman for his first meeting with King Hus- sein since Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty three months ago. Jordanian officials said the two sides had reached an under- standing regarding their ongoing dispute about control of Muslim holy sites in eastern Jerusalem. Under the terms of their un- derstanding, the PLO acknowl- edged Jordanian custodianship over the holy sites, while Jordan backed what was called future Palestinian sovereignty in east- ern Jerusalem. Before the PLO chairman's ar- rival, Jordanian Prime Minister Zeid Bin Shaker told the Parlia- ment that Jordan was seeking to improve its ties with the Arab world. Jordan suffered strained rela- tions with the PLO and Syria af- ter signing its historic peace treaty with Israel in October. Its ties with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait remain strained follow- ing Jordan's decision to side with Iraq during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Mr. Shaker became prime minister earlier this month, re- placing Abdul Salam al-Majali , who successfully negotiated the peace treaty with Israel.
