Mr. Morganroth was hospital- ized in December after a rare in- cident in which a common flu virus attacked his heart. Doctors in Ann Arbor placed the Troy res- ident on a machine that pumped his blood while they waited for a donor heart. Mr. Morganroth more than doubled the amount of time any patient has survived on the machine. On Thursday evening, Jan. 26, doctors informed the family a heart had been found, but there were no guarantees. By Fri- day, Mr. Morganroth had a new heart. "My husband had a feeling a heart, would be found," Mrs. Mor- ganroth said. "I tried to stop thinking about when it would happen. My concentration was on keeping Erik healthy." While Mr. Morganroth is do- ing well, he is not out of the woods yet. A heart recipient faces a high risk of infection and rejection five to 14 days after surgery. Mr. Morganroth received his heart from a 32-year-old metro Detroit woman. The cause of death was not revealed to protect the family's identity. their dreams with us." Tom Beyersdorf, executive di- rector of Gift of Life, said the woman's family did not mention the Morganroth case when they decided to donate the heart. The Morganroth family said they found strength from the out- pouring of support they received from friends and strangers. Since the family began holding press conferences to increase pub- lic awareness of the need for or- gan donations, they have been inundated with support. A 12-year-old boy sent a letter saying he "felt bad about Erik" and included $15 to help pay for a transplant. "Examples like this are touch- ing," Mrs. Morganroth said. "You realize just how much good is out there. What's most exciting is the hundreds of people who wrote and said they have become donors." Mrs. Morganroth, whose schedule as an attorney has been replaced with days and nights in the hospital, now spends about four hours every day responding L_ \/ to letters. She has well over 1,000 to write. ❑
