During World War II, tens of thousands of Alpine troops trained at Camp Hale, on the northern side of Tennessee Pass. Once the site of hundreds of buildings, Camp Hale is now little more than a broad valley floor and a few historical markers. Ski Coop- er, set astride the wooded pass with a base elevation of 10,500 feet, was built as a train- ing area. Clad in white, fur-trimmed parkas, shouldering 110-pound packs and teetering on hickory skis, boys and men from around the country learned to ski on Cooper's slopes before heading to do battle in Europe. They were the beginning of the Tenth Mountain Division, now based in Upstate New York. The veterans of that time came back from the war to help found the Amer- ican ski industry. They still gather in the re- gion to ski and reminisce. And that isn't half the history here. Leadville, nine miles down the road, was one of Colorado's biggest, wildest boom towns.
