Ask any hair-care expert the secret to gor-
geous hair, and one of the first responses will
be conditioning treatments — which need
to start months before the wedding in order
for hair to be wedding perfect.
Fine hair benefits most from liquid con-
ditioners that rinse out easily and don't leave
a film. Coarse or curly hair does better with
heavy cream conditioners that restore the
hair shaft for maximum shine. If hair is
chemically treated or colored, it also needs
a monthly deep conditioning treatment such
as hot oil.
As for color, new nonammonia, nonper-
oxide colorants are perfect for the bride-to-
be because they won't change hair color
dramatically and generally look best when
freshly done. A few months before the wed-
ding, ask your colorist about the latest
color rinses and give one a try at that
time. If you like the outcome — and
chances are you will — have your colorist
repeat the process a week or two before
your big day.

There also are available plenty of shine-
boosting styling products such as sprays,
gels and lotions — just be sure to practice
in advance to ensure a natural look that
holds its body and luster throughout the
day.
If you're considering changing your en-
tire hairstyle, go for a consultation as soon
after your engagement as possible — and at
least four months before your wedding. The
stylist can analyze your hair's texture and
recommend styles that will work with it, not
against it. A word of caution: A haircut is an
expression of yourself, so don't opt for a look
that's too styled if you think of yourself as
fresh and natural, and vice versa. Your wed-
ding day is a time to feel comfortable, not
contrived.
Whether you're opting for a hairstyle
that's new or tried and true, talk to your
stylist in advance about special-day styling
options. Bring your headpiece and a pic-
ture of your dress; discuss how to secure
the headpiece, and styling options if
you decide to remove your veil at the re-
ception.
Two weeks before the wedding, bring in
your headpiece and have a dress rehearsal
with the stylist so you can fine-tune any po-
tential problems ahead of time. LI
