LEISURE: The region is blessed with a mild
climate (which turns very hot and humid in
the summer), so most leisure-time activities
revolve around hotel swimming pools and the
lake. There's also a water park and lots of grav-
elly beach. Because of the strong undertow,
it is advisable to swim only in designated ar-
eas. Ask your hotel's personnel how to rent
water skis, a boat, canoe or kayak.
Famous for its natural hot springs, the
Tiberias Hot Springs Spa offers luxuriant
soaks, with the option of a massage or min-
eral bath.
After a day in the sun, stroll by the water-
front, where fishermen moor their boats for
the night There, a dozen open-air restaurants
offer delicious fresh-fish dinners (some are
kosher, some are not). Karamba, a vegetari-
an restaurant on the promenade, is always
packed with tourists and locals. If you like Chi-
nese, don't miss the Pagoda Restaurant
(kosher), arguably the country's best Chinese
restaurant
If the evening is mild, take a boat trip—
some provide meals and dance music—
across the lake. There's also a waterfront
bar/disco that goes into the wee hours.
NATURE: Some of the country's most beau-
tiful, unspoiled areas are located within an
hour or two of Tiberias. If possible, rent a car
and visit some of the surrounding national
parks and nature reserves. Two sources of in-
formation: For a listing of sights get a copy of
the brochure Tiberias at your hotel lobby.
Once you've narrowed down your choices,
contact the Society for the Protection of Na-
ture. In addition to running some of the best
hiking and Jeep trips in Israel, SPNI provides
detailed information about hiking and bird-
watching trails.
The Gamla Reserve on the Golan Heights
features waterfalls and excellent bird watch-
ing. The Hula Nature Reserve offers a nature
center, swamp lands brimming with wildlife
and superb bird watching. Up north, visit the
Tel Dan reserve, with its wonderful nature
trails, and the Banias (near Iryat Shemon-
ah), which is famous for its archaeological ex-
cavations and ice-cold streams.
EILAT
When Israelis want to get away from it all,
they come to Eilat, at the southernmost tip of
the country. Situated on the sparkling Red
Sea, it is an international haven for divers, who
explore Eilat's magnificent coral reefs.
