In a twist of what many ski areas offer,
Sunlight also runs a cross-country trail sys-
tem out of its base area. The 29 kilometers
of groomed, track-set trails lead to two rus-
tic cabins, one of which can be rented for
overnight use.
The food at the base lodge is basic burg-
ers and fries. If the weather's good, haul a
backpack to the top of the mountain and
grab a picnic table for the view of nearby
Mount Sopris and the Elk Mountains re-
ceding behind it.
Five percent of the mountain is rated as
expert, 20 percent as advanced, 55 percent

tory than any similar pairing.
During World War II, tens of thousands
of Alpine troops trained at Camp Hale, on
the northern side of Tennessee Pass. Once
the site of hundreds of buildings, Camp
Hale is now little more than a broad valley
floor and a few historical markers. Ski Coop-
er, set astride the wooded pass with a base
elevation of 10,500 feet, was built as a train-

on hickory skis, boys and men from around
the country learned to ski on Cooper's slopes
before heading to do battle in Europe.
They were the beginning of the Tenth
Mountain Division, now based in Upstate
New York. The veterans of that time came
back from the war to help found the Amer-
ican ski industry. They still gather in the re-
gion to ski and reminisce.
And that isn't half the history here.
Leadville, nine miles down the road, was
one of Colorado's biggest, wildest boom
towns. At one point it appeared ready to
eclipse Denver as the state capital. The 1893
silver crash busted the place, but not before
